Fashion in Tennis

Wednesday, June 24, 2009 posted by fashionista

The obsession with fashion was probably first seen in the Victorian age, with women dressing with one purpose in mind, which was to gain the attention of the opposite sex. In modern times, a Carrie Bradshaw would rather measure the sexiness of a woman depending on the shoes and bags she carries. However the obsession with fashion doesn’t end at this, fashionable outfits are even seen in sports. Women Tennis players have for long tried to make their games more memorable by wearing stylish, designer outfits. The game at times takes a back seat as reporters are more concerned with who sported what, who was a fashion diva and who was a fashion faux pas!

Probably the best thing about this sport is that even though associations like Wimbledon, the French or the Australian Open have certain rules regarding player’s uniform, these rules are not that stringent, thus allowing players, especially women players to experiment. Players like Anne White have shattered dress codes by playing in a white bodysuit during the 1980 Wimbledon, and more recently Serena Williams was seen sporting a white “trench” coat during the warm up matches of the Wimbledon 2008.

Serena Williams has sure been a popular name when it comes to tennis fashion. She is well known for her unusual and colorful outfits on court and in the year 2002, her name flashed across every news bulletin due to the black lycra suit she wore while playing in the US Open. During the 2004 US Open, she was banned for playing in knee high boots which she wore with her denim skirt.

The fashion beam balance is brought to equality with the likes of Anne White and Serena Williams on one side, trying hard to make radical fashion statements, and on the other Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams dressing to kill, but in a very subtle manner.

In the year 2005, ‘People’ named Maria Sharapova as one of the 50 most beautiful celebrities in the world and by 2006 she was titled the hottest athlete of the world by Maxim for the fourth consecutive year. Her predilection for fashion off court is carried on to the court as well, as if she dresses to be crowned the most fashionable athlete of all times. Off court she has been seen sporting a bikini and on court she is seen wearing the trendiest outfits such as racer back tees or a well cut dress by Nike.

The rivalry between the William sisters is quite apparent in their games, however when it comes to fashion, it is Venus who is seen dressed more in sync with fashion trends as compared to her younger sister. Her outfits confine to the subtlety which is required in the game however her sober dressing sense doesn’t make her a fashion faux pas. The former World No. 1 is spotted wearing regular dresses/ skirts which enable her to live up to her title as a Tennis Champion and a Fashion Diva.

Apart from these international beauties one Indian player who has entered a number of controversies because of her fashionable outfits is Sania Mirza. Quite recently she went on record proclaiming that “As long as I am winning, people shouldn’t care whether my skirt is six inches long or six feet long!”

This young Indian player was caught into the “morality” web with conventional Islamists demeaning her for her revealing outfits; however this did not stop her from being fashionable. In her home country people have often looked up to her as a fashion icon, imitating her outfits and her accessories.

So whether these women win or not, whether they are able to embed their games in the mind of the audiences on account of their play, they surely know how to steam up the tennis court with their fashion statements because as the saying goes the devil surely wears Prada!

the Bluetooth dress signal the future of fashion?

Friday, June 19, 2009 posted by fashionista

When it comes to designing stylish smart phones, Sony Ericsson has the mobile market cornered. Just look at the company’s gorgeous iida G9. The fashion-minded folks at the company don’t stop there, though. They recently teamed up with London College of Fashion to see which of its students could design the most innovative digital clothing design. The winner, Georgie Davies, 20, came up with a cocktail dress that’s wired with Bluetooth technology, allowing the garment to light up when the wearer gets an incoming call. Davies’ concept was tailored around not being able to hear her phone ring at a bar or club, but the butterfly-inspired design might make this dress a better fit for a rave. The dress is still a prototype, so for now you’ll have to go on setting your phone to vibrate so that you can feel an incoming call when you’re in a noisy venue. Now about getting a Robo-Chef to cook me pancakes for breakfast…

Foods You Should Be Eating

Monday, June 8, 2009 posted by fashionista

Eaten many coconuts lately? How about cherries or blueberries or grass-fed beef?

You should, because these are all foods with powerful health properties. However, few people pack their grocery carts full of these items.

Take kiwifruit. It’s chock full of vitamin C–a whopping 115% of what you need to eat in a day. It’s also low in calories–just 45 per fruit, sans skin.

“In America, most people don’t eat three servings of fruit and vegetables a day,” says nutritionist Jonny Bowden, author of seven books including, most recently, The 150 Most Effective Ways to Boost Your Energy. According to him, there are 10 very healthy foods we don’t eat enough of.

In Pictures: 10 Foods You Should Be Eating, But Aren’t

Ignore the Food Pyramid

Bowden says many Americans are misled by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food pyramid, which is a graphic, pyramid-shaped depiction of nutrition guidelines, updated every five years, that tells Americans what to eat according to food groups. Bowden dismisses it as the product of interest group politics.

“It demonizes fat,” notes Bowden. “Fat is an essential building block for many important compounds in the body.” This is why Bowden puts grass-fed beef, wild salmon and, yes, coconuts, on his top 10 list.

Salmon, in particular, is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which are associated with heart and brain health as well as bringing down blood pressure and triglycerides, a risk factor for heart disease. Omega-3s have also been found to improve mood and reduce inflammation, says Bowden.

Another food packed with nutritional value that’s present–but not necessarily front and center in every grocery store–is kale. A member of the cabbage family, which Bowden dubs “vegetable royalty,” kale contains indoles, a compound found to fight cancer. Kale is also rich in antioxidants, which also help prevent cancer, says Bowden.

If that’s not enough for you, kale is also full of sulforaphane, yet another cancer-prevention agent. Kale has calcium, iron and vitamins A, C and K, and two nutrients that are great for the eyes, including zeaxanthin. Kale’s pièce de résistance: Two cups packs three grams of fiber. Try sautéing it with garlic and butter, recommends Bowden. Or eat it like salad, with pine nuts, cranberries and olive oil.

Then there are coconuts, a terribly misunderstood food, according to Bowden. The fat in coconuts is a particular kind that’s good for you. It’s called MCT, or Medium-Chain Triglycerides. The body doesn’t store MCT as fat, says Bowden, but rather uses it as energy, like a carbohydrate. Coconuts are also high in lauric acid, a fatty acid that tends to kill pathogens. In addition, coconut oil is great for cooking since it has a very high smoke point.

Eat Mediterranean

For Bowden, sticking to a Mediterranean-style diet is the healthiest way to eat. That means plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fish, and lots of olive and nut oils. The Mediterranean diet has indeed been proved by study after study to have multiple healthful properties.

If all that sounds just too darn healthy, consider the 10th food on Bowden’s list: dark chocolate. Rich with a phytochemical called flavanol, found by a 2005 study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology to improve cardiovascular health, chocolate with at least 60% cocoa content should be a regular on your shopping list.

Chocolate and coconut anyone? OK, but not until you’ve finished your kale.
